Winning Hearts to the Arts
“Many kids thought the theater was just movies, popcorn and sitting still the whole time. As much as I tried to prepare them, they just couldn’t understand the theater experience. A couple boys even asked me if there would be a gift shop and video games. I realized it had been too long since we had been to the RiverPark Center and exposed the kids to drama, so we worked to come back,” said Ginger Crain, Arts teacher for Clarkson Elementary School in Grayson County.
When local field trip funds dried up and financially hard times fell on their community, Crain’s dedication to the arts and desire to expose her students to quality arts performances drove her to seek outside funding. Crain applied for and received 5 TranspARTation grants to attend RiverPark Center Arts Teach Kids 2014-15 and again for the 2015-16 season performances.
“As a grant reviewer, I know that not all grant requests are funded in that it is often a hard decision because there are so many deserving schools and great programs across the state that requests often exceed the funds available,” stated Faith Holley, Development Director at RiverPark Center who does not review grants that request funds for RiverPark events. “The fact that [Crain] has received so many grants shows her dedication to the arts and the quality of programs available at RiverPark Center.”
“Donna [RiverPark Center Program Director] is absolutely wonderful and helps us with scholarships,” commented Crain. Many kids in the past were kept home by families on field trip days due to the inability to pay, but with scholarships available from RiverPark Center and transportation grant funds, the families realize the money is available and ask for help more readily. So access to the arts has greatly improved as a whole for Clarkson Elementary School. Your contribution to RiverPark Center’s Education & Scholarship Fund opens the world of the arts for many children.
